The stage was all set for Carrick to make his international impression on Steve McClaren, but unfortunately it didn't exactly go to plan for Michael Carrick.

Having been called up for the team to play Andorra and Macedonia in the qualifiers, Carrick must have been hopeful of a place in the team, but his wish was never granted, sadly.

England coach McClaren stuck to his preferred midfield combo of Hargreaves, Downing, Lampard and Gerrard, and with the team far from struggling, there was no need to bring Carrick on to help sturdy things up in midfield.

Carrick instead had to be content at being a mere spectator on England's 5-0 win which set them on their path towards European glory, and Switzerland 2008.

Goals from Crouch (2), Defoe (2) and Gerrard sealed the win.



England: Robinson, P Neville (Lennon 65), A Cole, Gerrard, Brown, Terry (c), Hargreaves, Lampard, Crouch, Defoe (Johnson 70), Downing (Richardson 65)
