Manchester United crashed out of the Carling Cup - the trophy they won last season - on the back of a 1-0 loss to lowly Southend, who currently lie bottom of the Championship!
United fans couldn't believe what they were seeing when a team full of internationals, though admittedly not United's strongest side, failed to beat the minnows. Heinze, Ronaldo, Rooney and Smith all took a starting role, and all came close to scoring the goal that would have surely sent them through (after extra time). No Carrick though, and no Saha.
It was United who created the better chances in the first half an hour, with the Premiership leaders understandably having more of the ball. Smith blasted straight at the keeper on 12 minutes, and Fletcher also came close early on.
Despite the pressure, it was Southend who scored first. Against the run of play, Southend won a free-kick on the edge of the box. Freddy Eastwood stepped up and smashed the ball home, and there was little anyone could do about it. Had Kuszczak moved off his line a second earlier he may have been able to get a hand to it, but even then it may have powered into the back of the net anyway!
Manchester United went into all-out-attack mode, and Cristiano Ronaldo in particular had a number of rifled shots that on other days might have gone in.
His first effort from 40 yards was right down the keepers threoat, but the goalie was forced to tip his later free-kick over the bar, and was almost caught out by a fizzing drive from the left.
Gabriel Heinze had a notable chance, curling the ball just past the back post from 30 yards, and in the final seconds of the game kieran Richardson had the chance to be the hero. Had he connected with John O'Shea's cross from 3 yards out it would surely have gone in, but Richardson could only kick the air, and United were out.
