Manchester United continued theri run of good form with a derby-day victory over local rivals Manchester City. WHilst the rivalry may not be as fierce as it once was - United now consider Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Leeds as fiercer rivals than City, its always good to win the 'bragging rights' for teh Red half of Manchester!
The game was going United's way from the very start, with the Reds coming out in lightning fashion to stun City into submission. This time it was goal twins Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney who linked up to net the first inside just 5 minutes.
Cristiano Ronaldo's incisive pass was just too far for Distin to reach, and Rooney was able to smash the ball in as it rolled through to him with his very first touch of the ball.
United failed to capitalise on their early dominance, with Giggs firing just wide, and Carrick hitting the ball sweetly but straight at the goalie from 40 yards.
City had a period of possession towards the end of the first half, but were stung cruelly on the counter-attack, with Gabriel Heinze sliding a low ball in across the box for Louis Saha to run on to and score. Saha in truth didn't know a lot about where the ball was going, but slid in to fight for the ball with the keeper, and saw it fortuitously bounce up over the keeper, off thwe crossbar, and into the net.
United should have killed the game off in teh early stages of the second half, with Rooney being put through but failing to beat Isaksson, who had taken over in between the sticks.
Trabelsi almost put United into trouble with his stunning pile-drive goal with twenty minutes to play, but thankfully the Red Devils had the answers, and came up with a third and final blow.
Ryan Giggs ran at pace up the right wing and crossed the ball in. Cristiano Ronaldo ran in towards goal and met the cross with a neat volley to send the Stretford End into a collective sigh of relief!
Man Utd: Van der Sar, Neville, Ferdinand, Vidic, Heinze, Ronaldo, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, Rooney, Saha (O'Shea 66).
