Manchester United 3 - 0 Everton
Wednesday 29th November 2006
Old Trafford, Manchester
Manchester United had a good time of it last night - winning by a 3 goal margin despite Fergie tinkering with his midfield and defence, and ending up with all but one of teh first team defenders on the pitch!
Fergie chose this game to rest his stalwarts, with Scholes, Giggs and Saha all left on the sidelines. Evra kept his place as he looks to build up fitness, whilst Vidic's place alongside Rio and Gary was taken by Silvestre. Richardson, O'Shea and Fletcher were all drafted in to play in the middle with Carrick, and Ronaldo and Rooney set the pace upfront.
As the fans heard the team they could be forgiven for thinking that it would be a struggle - it is exactly what it turned out to be.
For 39 minutes United hardly had a shot on gaol, with Cristiano Ronaldo coming closest with a freekick. The Everton boys are masters at keeping the game disrupted, and didn't allow United to start their pasing game (can you still play that with Fletcher O'Shea and Richardson in the team?!)
It was against the run of play that United got their first goal. Everton had just pressured the United goal, but the Reds broke, and the ball found its way to richardson on the left. He handed it into Micahel Carrick, who smashed the ball at goal in the hope of his first in United colours. The ball rebounded back off a defender, and Cristiano Ronaldo half-volleyed it with such precision that even though the pace of the ball wasn't great, it rolled in past Richard Wright.
With Everton's game-plan in ruins United almost scord again before half-time - Kieran Richardson span a free-kick off the crossbar!
The second half began in the slow in-fluent way of the first, and it never looked like turning into a proper football match.
Patrice Evra finally put the game beyond doubt on 63 minutes, with a well taken run and passing shot down the left.
Cristiano Ronaldo was taken off to save his legs, and Gabriel Heinze entered the fray, along with Wes Brown.
The game was wrapped up to give it an unfair scoreline on 88 minutes, when John O'Shea prodded home Patrice Evra's low cross.
Poor Football, great result.
