CARRICK INTERVIEW
ManUtd.com have managed to blag an interview with United legend Michael Carrick. He talks about Ronaldo, Scholes and Rooney, as well as his hopes for an England future.
What did you think you can add to your game here?
Everything. You never stop improving and along with everyone else I want to become a better player. If I keep working hard, that’ll happen. I improved a hell of a lot in my two years at Tottenham so hopefully I can keep progressing here.
Do you think there are more goals to come from you, playing in this team?
Maybe, yeah. When I was at Tottenham people said that but the gaffer there was never concerned. He knew in the position I was playing I never got forward enough to score goals, it wasn’t something that was a big requirement for where I was playing. If I can get forward a bit more and score then great but it’s not something I’m concerned about. Scoring goals is great but as long as we’re winning I’m not really too fussed
Coming to United must have strengthened your international ambitions...
Playing more for England is still a big ambition, and the progression of challenging for honours, playing at the peak of the Premiership and Champions League, it can only help me. Getting in the squad on a regular basis was an achievement, but you’re never happy with that, you want more minutes on the pitch and that’s what I’m striving for.
There's a good spine of a team with Rio, Wes and Gary in defence, Wazza up front and you in the middle. That could benefit England as well as United...
It would be nice to think that could happen. In the past there’s been a strong United influence with Beckham, the Nevilles, Butt and Scholes. They’ve been important in the past and I’d love to be as successful as they were.
You had already played alongside Wayne Rooney with England, are you excited about having him as a club team-mate?
Of course, because we’ve got a young squad that can all grow together. There are still a lot of experienced players but it’s a young squad and the quality is phenomenal. If all goes well I’ll be making good relationships with a few of the lads on the pitch and together we can create a successful spell for the club.
And you’ve got Ronaldo as a team-mate rather than an opponent…
He’s world class and he’s still young. To be that good that early, he’s only going to get better. I’ve been up against him in the past and I know how hard it is to play against him so to be on the same team is a bit of a relief!
Scholes is another player who needs no introduction...
Scholes is probably the best player I’ve ever played against. He’s such a top player and I don’t think he’s appreciated as much as he should be. I suppose that’s the way he prefers it but he’s such a talented player and I nice lad. I’m looking forward to playing with him a lot more, not just in games but in training too.
